Below you will find a list of courses I have taken at Clemson along with brief descriptions for each. At the bottom of the page I have attached several examples of my coursework that I have submitted over the past few years. 

Language Coursework

ASL 101-102

Introduction to ASL, concentrating on the basics of the language and general Deaf history and culture. Visual-gestural communication methods were used for teaching.

ASL 201-202

Intermediate level of learning ASL. Focused on building sentence structure and receptive/expressive proficiency in ASL, with an expansion of basic vocabulary. Classes conducted in a combination of ASL and visual-gestural communication methods.

ASL 301-302

Advanced level courses of ASL. Focused on fluency, vocabulary development, grammatical proficiency, use of classifiers, receptive/expressive skills, translating written texts into ASL and vice versa, and informal conversational skills. Classes conducted fully in ASL.

ASL 4010 - Linguistics of ASL

Advanced level instruction of linguistic systems and structures of ASL. Examined the history of the Stokoe system of ASL linguistics and focused on building proficiency in categorizing units of signs based on the Stokoe/Liddell & Johnson linguistic models.

Culture & Lit. Coursework

ASL 3050 - Deaf Studies 

In-depth study into the culture, language, and history of the American Deaf community. Focused on introducing Deaf culture and the difference between deaf and Deaf. Class conducted in English. 

 

ASL 4600 - Deaf Literature

Advanced level of socratic instruction centering around the literature of Deaf communities. Examined the relation between literature and culture and the importance of “oral” literature in the context of ASL storytelling. Class conducted in ASL. 

 

ASL 4050 - Advanced Deaf Culture

Advanced level of socratic instruction focusing on the implications of identity in the context of lived experiences. Examined DeafCrit theory and the complex intersections of identities. Class conducted in ASL. 

 

ASL 4100 - Advanced Deaf History

Advanced level of instruction centering around the in-depth history of the American Deaf community. Focused on the origins of Deaf education, the rise of oralism, notable figures in Deaf history, and the fight for access in the twentieth century. Class conducted in ASL.

PSYC 3520 - Social Psychology 

Analyzed human social behavior from the perspective of the individual as a participant in social relationships. Studied attitude formation and change, interpersonal relations, conformity, conflict resolution, aggression and violence, social communication, and group phenomena.

PSYC 3570 - Psychology and Culture

Examined the differences in cultures from around the world, the cognitive implications of certain cultural behaviors and attitudes, and how those cognitive behaviors present themselves within a given culture. Focused on the differences of individualistic and collectivist cultures and the classification of both.

PSYC 3680 - Organizational Psychology

Examined the presence of psychology in the workplace and the importance of increased organizational effectiveness. Focused on psychological factors relating to communication, decision making, conflict, leadership, work stress, power, and organizational change.

PSYC 3700 - Personality

Analyzed the differences in behavior across gender, sex, age, and status, the cognitive implications of behavior, and the hypothesized origins of psychological tendencies. Focused primarily on the acquisition of personality traits, the development of behavioral tendencies, and the cognitive responses to certain environmental conditions.

 

PSYC 4800 - Health Psychology 

Examined the role of psychology and cognitive behaviors in the prevention and development of health issues. Focused on the biopsycho-social model and its application in the assessment, treatment, and prevention of health problems.

Other Significant Coursework

STAT 2300 - Statistical Methods I

Introduction to basic statistical concepts and methods of statistical inference in the context of research. Course topics included data collection, organization and presentation of data, measures of central tendency and variation, elementary probability, the binomial/ normal distribution, sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, correlation, and simple linear regression.

LANG 3000 - Intro Linguistics 

Introduction to linguistic properties and systems of linguistic classification. Focused on the differences in language, the six categories of linguistics (phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics), and the development of proficiency in classifying, identifying, and labeling linguistic units.

ENGL 3100 - Critical Writing About Literature

Focused on the further development and proficiency of critical literary analysis. Examined various works of genres and poetry in the context of close-reading, research, analysis, and writing skills.

Linguistic Proficiency 

This short video was an assignment given to me to narrate a separate video about a woman who broke her ankle and the various treatments she received after going to the doctor. 

Culture Competency

Deaf and Dementia - Essay (pdf)

The purpose of this essay is to document and analyze medical and social discrimination against deaf individuals with dementia. 

Dysconscious Audism - Essay (pdf) 

This essay contains analyses of four Deaf autobiographies with the purpose of examining the existence of dysconscious audism in America.

This video was an assignment given to me to describe a story of a time where I got sick. I chose the time I flew to California and got strep throat on the way!

Literature & Humanities Competency

ABC Story "The Matrix" - Essay (pdf)

This essay includes a step-by-step analysis of the ABC story titled "The Matrix," while also sharing the importance of ABC storytelling in Deaf literature. 

From Rejection to Love - Essay (pdf)

The purpose of this essay is to summarize and analyze the autobiography From Rejection to Love by Avril Hertneky, a Deaf Canadian-Iraqi woman.
